By Kirsten MacFarlane in New Zealand Monday March 15 2010 TRADITIONAL Irish fare got an upmarket makeover Down Under as New Zealanders sought to give Health Minister Mary Harney a send-off to remember on her last night in Auckland. So instead of plain old bacon and cabbage, Ms Harney's green vegetables of broccolini and savoy cabbage came drizzled with Guinness at a swanky St Patrick's banquet. |

What are the secret ingredients of being a chef and a hit on the culinary runway? Unlike the contestants in New Zealand's Next Top Model, it doesn't require a physical checklist (although we're not adverse to a bit of eye-candy in the mix). Of all the chefs I've watched perform on stage, the best always serve up some showmanship with their signature dish.

Food tours are a good excuse to be truly greedy without appearing like a slob. You salivate, gorge on platefuls of tasty treats, and then gossip about the best place to buy well-aged hung meat. The dream foodie itinerary might include sucking down new season's piquillo peppers in Spain, nibbling on taleggio cheese in Italy and gorging on moon cakes in Shanghai.

Martin Bosley is somewhat bemused by his rock-star status across the ditch. Wellington's much-lauded chef has just performed before hundreds of Brisbane foodie lovers, clamouring for any morsel of culinary advice, and surprisingly, personal backstory. |

Top marks to any celebrity willing to kiss a snail on camera. It's certainly a memorable moment when dancing legend Paul Mercurio holds aloft a little critter and gives it a quick smooch, twice.
"Oh no ... the love dart is coming out," chortles Mercurio. |

Watching DIY entrepreneur Angela Beer totter down a steep driveway in 10cm heels and designer fur-trimmed coat, it's hard to picture her on a building site. She's clutching an over-sized handbag, not a 30-piece toolkit. "Sorry I'm late. I took the wrong turning off the motorway," chirps Beer. |

Just like his cooking, Govind Armstrong is so hot right now, writes Kirsten MacFarlane If it was a Hollywood movie script, you'd have to rewrite the ending. When Govind Armstrong, executive chef at Table 8 in LA's Melrose Avenue, proposed to his screenwriter girlfriend in New Zealand last year, everything was going to plan. |

Water buffalo don't moo like cows. It's a throaty drone, close to a strangled note from a didjeridoo. Helen Dorresteyn and her four-year-old daughter Saskia are doing a splendid imitation. "Hmmmmh ... come here my beautiful girls," she implores of a small herd of milking buffalo mooching around in a paddock near Clevedon in South Auckland. |

By Kirsten MacFarlane `There's nothing like eating it fresh," says Helen Dorresteyn, dipping her hand into a tub of brine and pulling out a fist-sized ball of porcelain-white mozzarella. "Keen to try it with some fresh tomato and basil?" A simple dining pleasure enjoyed by the Italians for centuries, in New Zealand, this platter of freshly sliced mozzarella represents a milestone for the cheese industry. |
